Visual artist Samrat Nagar combines graphic design and photography to create striking images
On the occasion of the launch of the Galaxy S22 series, Vogue India and Samsung India have embarked on a journey to curate a visual narrative that illuminates the elusive yet impending sense of loneliness that a city’s nightlife instills. In this campaign, aptly titled #WeOwnTheNight, we showcase rising creators defining tomorrow’s zeitgeist by capturing and filming the most remarkable visual content in low-light environments with the Galaxy S22 series. It’s time to rediscover beauty amid the chaos of the cities we know and love.
Samrat is an enthusiastic photographer, videographer and art director, and a look at his impressive portfolio of work reveals his innate fascination with hip-hop music and fashion. From his earliest days in the industry, Samrat has worked on developing experimental imagery to break from the traditional mold and likes to introduce a touch of quirkiness into his designs by experimenting with transitions and movement. So while his creative ethos brings the nuances of pop culture to life, his cinematic eye captures and translates the world around us into vibrant, eccentric and dynamic settings.
Tell us a bit about your professional journey so far.
Honestly, the job opportunities came like a domino effect for me! I graduated from NIFT in 2019 and was lucky enough to work with Fila India for my graduation project, right after which Diljit Dosanjh approached me for a shoot. Since then, I have worked with several celebrities, musicians, sportspeople and brands as an art director and visual artist.
Where do you look for creative inspiration?
The world of music, especially western hip-hop, is an important source of inspiration for me. It’s such a versatile industry, and there are so many iconic artists producing innovative and creative content every day. Whether it’s music videos, album covers, or even feature films, there’s a lot to explore, learn, and exploit.
How was your experience shooting with the Samsung Galaxy S22 series?
I love shooting content in low light so using this phone has been a very rewarding experience. I didn’t have to worry about limiting myself to any particular environment for the shot, and the frames captured every detail flawlessly, regardless of the background or light source. It also lets you experiment with different settings, and the pro-video mode adds a cinematic aesthetic to your setting, so overall it’s a great gadget to have.
